Es el editor de historia de la revista literaria Los Angeles Review of Books. Es también columnista habitual del diario judío Daily Forward y colaborador frecuente de New York Times, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Foreign Policy y Chronicle of Higher Education.
Entre sus libros cabe destacar Nimes at War (1995), Cook and Bull Stories (2004), France and Its Empire Since 1870 (2014) Catherine and Diderot: The Empress, The Philosopher and the Fate of the Enlightenment (2019) y los publicados en Biblioteca Buridán Albert Camus, elementos de una vida y, junto a John T.
